The Dimm's Dose - Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts ended up being better than I expected. The visuals were stunning, especially when underwater and in space (yes, space). I think they did a great job of adding new dynamics to military style shooters, especially in terms of the environments, but also with the addition of a canine! Although the use of the dog was limited, I thought it was a great idea that was implemented with perfection. Overall, the game had pretty darn good graphics and a relatively engaging story that kept me interested for a good portion of the game. The voice acting was solid and the gameplay mechanics were very manageable.

I think the biggest downside to this game was how limited it felt. For example, you get to use the dog, ride in a tank and fly a helicopter, but you don't get to explore the game with these options for very long before you never get to use them again. I would have liked to participate in many missions with the helicopter or the dog, but unfortunately, that was not the case. My favorite part of this game was riding in the jeep on frozen lake, as you get to use the mounted gun and shoot out holes in the ice behind you.

The Dimm's Dose - BioShock Infinite

I am still trying to wrap my head around this game. Although I enjoyed it throughout, I felt utterly confused over the last 20 minutes of the game that my head just about exploded. In all honesty, I do believe that I understand the general idea of the story and therefore I can provide an honest review of how I felt about the game.

Overall, I thought this was a very good game. Although I was not a fan of BioShock 2, I did feel that Infinite was innovative in it's own way, especially in the environment in which it took place. I loved the battle system, especially with the upgrades that were proposed to you throughout the game. It was very challenging, but at the same time I never felt overwhelmed at any point in the game. The voice acting was top notch and the graphics and character detail were very neat and different. I like the idea of having a person there to help with ammo, health and in this case, salts (the formula used for special abilities).

I thought it was really cool how everything was slowly unraveling toward the end of the game before it is eventually thrown on you all at once and leaves you either scratching your head or screaming "holy s**t!"

The Dimm's Dose - Binary Domain

Binary Domain is by far my favorite game on the list thus far. I was pleasantly surprised by many facets of the game. The story, for example, was very innovative and I felt immersed throughout. The voice acting was tremendous and the character detail was excellent. The gameplay was pretty darn good, with a cover system and mechanics system that were reminiscent of Gears of War. The weapon choices weren't necessarily outstanding, as I pretty much just rocked the machine gun the entire time. Binary Domain did implement a unique upgrade system which reminded me of Tetris a bit, which I thought was pretty darn cool. I also really liked the idea of communicating with your squad members via headset, although I decided to stick with the simple multiple choice options via the controller.

The squad member AI was pretty fun, as I felt they were intelligent enough to actually assist me and they (generally) listened to my commands. It was, however, frustrating whenever my orders were not sitting well with said squad members, as they would not do what I felt was necessary in order to overcome an obstacle in the game. The enemies in the game were relatively easy, other than bosses, and I felt that all the general enemies were the same as far as difficulty goes. With that being said, the bosses were all unique and each had their own weaknesses to exploit, although sometimes they were very easily exploited.

Overall, this was a great game with a great story, great voice acting, good graphics and fun gameplay. Like I said before, it's my favorite thus far.

The Dimm's Dose - Battlefield 4

Despite the fact that Battlefield 4 had better graphics, less bugs and a nicer looking atmosphere than Battlefield 3, I still felt that Battlefield 3 was slightly better. I felt the story was a bit lackluster in Battlefield 4 and the characters weren't very memorable. The gameplay was very similar to that of Battlefield 3, especially in terms of AI intelligence. The sound and the visuals stood out, as the overall destruction of the ever-changing environments was pretty spectacular. However, I felt bored with the story too often and I was looking forward to simply beating it just to get past it and move on to the next game on my list. The best part of the game was riding on the speedboat in the choppy water. The animations of the waves were amazing!

The Dimm's Dose - Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 was the first Battlefield game I had played since Battlefield 1942 and it wasn't too bad. I found myself getting into the story, which is unusual for me when I play a shooter. The AI wasn't very intelligent, unfortunately, especially when it came to members of my unit, but it made the game more challenging. Enemies seemed to focus their attention on me, which was annoying at times, but it did make killing the enemy a bit more enjoyable. The graphics were fantastic, for sure, as well as the general atmosphere. The biggest downside to the game were the bugs and there were no shortage of bugs in the game. Aside from the bugs, there was nothing I could really say that was bad about the game. It was on the short side, as the game took me about five hours, but I think that is about what is to be expected with a military-style shooter. Overall, it was good game with great graphics and an engaging story, with a few too many bugs thrown in.

The Dimm's Dose - Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel

Seeing as this was game one on the list of 50 games, there wasn't really much to compare it to. However, I did play the previous two games in the series and I felt as if this was the worst game in the series. With that being said, I still felt like it was a pretty entertaining game, but there was a lot to be desired. The original Army of Two game was fun, especially with it's implementation of what they referred to as back-to-back (when you and your friend or AI would go back-to-back and shoot everything in sight). This was basically an invincibility mode as your character would simply destroy everything in sight with an unlimited amount of ammo. In The Devil's Cartel, this mode was substituted with what is called Overkill. Overkill is similar to back-to-back in the sense that you destroy everything and have unlimited ammo. However, I miss the option of going back-to-back, as I felt that was the staple of the original game.

The story in The Devil's Cartel was engaging, but I felt myself only caring about one thing about halfway through the game (and I won't spoil it). Another issue I had with the game were the bosses, or lack thereof. In Army of Two: The 40th Day (the second game in the trilogy), there were a series of mini-bosses that were heads and tails more difficult than an average enemy. I felt like there was a shortage of tough enemies in The Devil's Cartel and there were really no bosses to speak of, other than the final boss. I will admit, however, that the final fight was pretty rough and made the ending pretty darn good. Overall, the game was pretty decent, but it could have been a whole lot better. The best part of the game, of course, was the weapon customization. Army of Two fans will know what I'm talking about.
